The Department of Human Services in School of Education and Human Development at the University of Virginia seeks applicants for a tenure-eligible faculty position at the rank of Associate or Full Professor in Communication Sciences and Disorders (CSD). The CSD program was established over 80 years ago as the first of its kind in the mid-Atlantic region and has maintained accreditation by the Council on Academic Accreditation in Audiology and Speech Language Pathology (CAA) of the American Speech Language Hearing Association (ASHA) for over 50 years. This vibrant program is dedicated to high quality training that prepares students for practice and research in a pluralistic society. The successful candidate will maintain a productive line of independent scholarly research in any area of the field of communication sciences and disorders, contribute to teaching in the B.S.Ed., M.Ed. and Ph.D. degree programs, and engage in professional service locally, nationally, and potentially internationally. Candidates with expertise in any area of speech–language pathology are welcome to apply. Candidates with expertise in adult neurogenic communication disorders, speech and hearing science, augmentative and alternative communication (AAC), or habilitative audiology are particularly encouraged to apply. This is a 9-month, salaried, tenure-eligible position with potential opportunities for future CSD program leadership and development.
The School of Education and Human Development at the University of Virginia offers a rich intellectual and collaborative environment for research, including opportunities for cross-disciplinary collaboration with faculty from across health- and education-related disciplines. Housed within the Department of Human Services, the Communication Sciences and Disorder (CSD) program includes academic programs at the Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Doctoral level. The Sheila C. Johnson Center for Clinical Services (SJC) offers an ideal environment for on-site clinical training and services. The SJC provides multidisciplinary clinical services for individuals of all ages, including speech and language pathology and audiology services. The SJC, located in the same building as CSD faculty offices, is committed to working collaboratively with faculty to facilitate access to SJC clinical populations for research purposes. Department level travel and professional development stipends are also provided in the amount of $1,500 for Assistant Professors, $1150 for Associate Professors, and $850 for Full Professors annually.

Continuing education, travel, and conference reimbursements are provided via the University Education Benefit, department travel stipends, and/or through faculty grant funding.
Schedule
Annual commitment is 9 months (academic year runs August 24 – May 24). However, 3 months of additional summer salary support can be obtained through external funding.
Remote flexibility
Certain duties and responsibilities, including but not limited to teaching, advising, mentoring and participation in program, departmental and school meetings are to be conducted primarily on-Grounds and in-person at the University of Virginia. Faculty have the discretion to complete other duties in a manner that they deem most appropriate.
Additional Work Hours
There is no explicit expectation for regular evening or weekend work, unless the faculty member is teaching an evening course. Work outside of core hours may occur on occasion but is typically performed at the discretion of the faculty member.
PTO
Teaching faculty members employed for nine months do not receive annual leave. They observe University holidays and determine their own hours during semester breaks scheduled in the academic calendar. They do not have specific University responsibilities or duties during the summer apart from those associated with registration and the preparation of materials for the academic year. The University’s Faculty Leave Policy provides a range of leave options for professional and personal reasons.

Parental Leave Policy

Percent Effort
Workload is set annually by the faculty member’s department chair. Tenured and tenure-track faculty workload generally comprises undergraduate and/or graduate instruction, advising, professional research and scholarship, and school and University service. The optimal assignment of these duties depends on many factors, including degree
level (undergraduate or graduate), curriculum, department instructional needs, faculty expertise, and the intensity of work in any of these categories. The default position for a tenured or tenure-track faculty member’s load is 4 units of teaching and advising (50%), 3 units of research and scholarship (37.5%), and one unit of service and governance (12.5%).
Teaching
The faculty area of expertise for this position is open. Course coverage will ideally be situated within the faculty members area(s) of expertise. Typical faculty load is 2:2. New faculty may be offered course releases and summer support to assist in course development and research.
Research
Startup packages are provided. Candidates with expertise in any of the following areas are preferred: adult neurogenic communication disorders, speech and hearing science, augmentative and alternative communication (AAC), or habilitative audiology.
Service
Requirements For Tenure And Promotion
The faculty member selected for this position at either the Associate Professor or Full Professor rank will be expected to undergo an expedited tenure review. EHD publishes criteria for promotion and tenure which vary by rank and track. Promotion candidates submit a dossier to be reviewed by an internal promotion and tenure committee consisting of school faculty. Promotion and tenure cases are assessed using a combination of quantitative and qualitative criteria, and are voted upon by the school’s faculty for recommendation to the Executive Vice President and Provost.
