Description
Speech-Language Pathologists are assigned to schools based on the citywide needs of the district. Job requirements related to general and special education services, evaluation, staffing, and mandated therapeutic services are expected.
Required Qualifications
State licenses: Illinois
CCCs required: No, $2,000k+/year stipend for holding active CCC (but not required)
Other required qualifications:
A valid license issued by the Illinois State Board of Education (Professional Educator License/PEL) and Illinois Department of Professional Regulations (IDFPR) endorsed as a Speech Pathologist. Willingness to travel to multiple school locations as a citywide speech-language pathologist as needed.
Physical Requirements:
Light Work: Exerting up to twenty (20) pounds of force occasionally, up to ten (10) pounds of force frequently, or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.
Employment Expectations:
All new hires must satisfactorily complete all CPS on-boarding requirements which include, but are not limited to, passing a tuberculosis test, drug test, and state and federal criminal background checks. CPS is a drug and alcohol-free workplace.

Salaried position, pay is guaranteed regardless of student availability, number of sessions/evaluations, etc.
Pay Rate Determiners
Pay is based on the Chicago Teachers Union contract. The above pay range is based on Lane 2 (Master's degree), Steps 1–8 for the 2025/2026 school year, as CPS accepts up to 8 years of out-of-district school-based experience.
The above pay range does not include the CCC stipend or increment pay for high-needs positions, and will be paid additionally. Pay increases each year with annual Step increases and cost-of-living increases, and when moving up the lane scale via completion of professional development hours (225 PDH per lane).

Schedule
5 days/week, 7 hours/day (varies per school; not flexible). Most schools start between 7:45 am and 9:00 am and end between 2:45 pm and 4:00 pm. This is a citywide position within the City of Chicago. School location assigned upon hire.

Holidays
The district is closed on federal holidays; as this is a salaried position, holiday school closure does not impact pay.
Productivity Requirements
No formal productivity requirements; it is expected that SLPs provide as many mandated intervention minutes as possible based on students' IEPs.

Caseload cap of 60 (including both direct and consultative-only cases).

CF details: Many of our tenured staff began their careers at Chicago Public Schools, and are thrilled to support new SLPs via formal or informal mentorship.
Training program: All Clinical Fellows and licensed new staff are assigned New Hire Mentors to help them transition into a career with CPS; and, if necessary, provide the mandated direct and indirect supervision hours. New hire meetings are held regularly with a focus on specific competency area training and to answer questions and collaborate with other new hires. Lead SLPs and managers are always available for additional support and guidance!
